The Duellists May 2007

Balance

In March 2007 MediaShed were invited to the Manchester Arndale Shopping Centre as part of the Futuresonic Festival to make a film combining free-media with free-running. Parkour or free-running involves fluid uninterrupted movement adapting motion to obstacles in the environment. Like free-media, free-running makes use of and re-enrgises the infrastructure of the city. Free-media film adapts environmental and discarded hardware to make filmmaking accessible to all.

Working with Southend based professional parkour breakin' crew Methods of Movement a choreographed performance was filmed in the shopping centre over three consecutive nights. The film was shot using only the existing in-house CCTV network of 160 cameras operated from the central control room, with a soundtrack created entirely from the foundsounds and noises recorded during the performance.

FREE MEDIA FROM THE MOUTH OF THE THAMES

This event is part of the "Enter Network" hosted by The Junction - a series of monthly networking events designed to build media arts contacts, knowledge and resources in the Eastern region. Lots of organisers from around the region will be present. This is our big opportunity to show them how it goes down!

An open discussion about the free-media philosophy featuring some of the MediaShed's most recent media arts projects:

Graham Harwood - what is free-media and why did we choose the MediaShed model for Southend?

Richard Wright - how does it all work? "Telephone Trottoire", an art project for Congolese cellphones;

David Valentine - the "Free-media Video Toolkit", building a free-media resource from New York to the East of England;

Rory McPherson - "LEDFun", Rory's recent "free-media" based microbusiness;

and from Ravensbourne College - Prof. Karel Dudesek on DIY media and the "Takeaway Festival"

So relax, feel free to ask questions, try things out and generally breath in the atmosphere of free-media!

Thursday December 7, from 6.30-9.00pm
The MediaShed, Unit 38, Grainger Road Industrial Estate, Southend on Sea, SS2 5DD.

the commercial April 2006

When MediaShed members found out about ‘Video Sniffin’ on-line, a term given to the practice of picking up the public signals being broadcast by wireless CCTV, they decided to apply the technology to make a film. Young people from the local YMCA and others used a cheap video receiver from a high street store to ‘sniff’ the streets for CCTV cameras. After finding 24 cameras or ‘hotspots’ they then asked shop owners if they could make a film by acting out in front of their CCTV cameras and recording the signal. The shop owners were very surprised and happy for the young people to create a film this way.

Video Sniffin’

Everywhere we go today CCTV cameras are watching us. They have become so common that we ignore their presence. Who is watching us? Why? What do the cameras see? How is this information interpreted? The MediaShed decided to answer some of these questions with some direct action. By taking over the CCTV networks the technology can be freed from its usual applications of security. Instead of a process of control, there can be a process of freedom.

The MediaShed decided to make use of the CCTV networks readily available within the environment as way of making films. By hacking and hijacking the cameras the MediaShed can create its very own television studio within buildings, shopping centres or the streets of any town. Thereby eliminating the need for expensive cameras – all that is required is a way into the system and a recording device.
