MA Interactive Media
Laurie Grove Baths Research
Jean Demars (22/10/07)
Objectives
The central objective of my research is located on the borderline of the building (inside/outside (dis-)connection). This will be investigated on old and new media as well as physical access.
Search for data available on access to building as a bathhouse
Map media-systems that connect the inside/outside of the building
Measure flows of communication in various parts of the network
Record swipe-card access to building
Install CCTV in the porch and hack neighbouring ones
Record sounds associated to research
Record official/non-official representation in public space
Build a database using MySQL
Use of video/sound editing
Two ideas could be explored with the present set of data:
a) Disrupt security of the site, which could involve some form of hacking, or alternatively, multiply security points as to make it redundant.
b) make a video/sound installation focused on access to building and using the data found during investigation.
Resources and Strategies
Contact Porter to go around the building and map media-systems
Contact the University IT team: inquiring about security, flows of communication and access recording
Make map on which points of convergence, limited access and weak points can be highlighted
Learn to video-sniff
Identify sites from which to get sound, e.g. swipe-card, IT control room.
Learn to edit video/sound
Learn to use MySQl
Proof of accomplishment
To present to the group the results of my research
To produce a map of bordering media-systems
To produce a database with flows of communication and access (past/present)
To produce image and sound of access and surrounding are
To know how to use MySQL
To know how to use video/sound editing applications
To (further) think of a project to do for the Data Jamming
Evaluation Criteria and Means of Validation
Good command of applications used
Peer evaluation
Is the project useful?
