My objectives:

• Analyse Laurie Grove Baths in terms of “ACCESS”

• Two paradigms for analysing “ACCESS”

1. Analogic Era: presence/absence (Victorian Age)
2. Information Era : pattern/randomness (Present)

1. Presence/Absence  Private/Public
2. Pattern/Randomness  Right/No Right to Enter

• Understand what is meant by “access” : social/ economic/ cultural/ political access, a way of entering, a right to use etc…
• Track any kind of access to the building (then and now)
• Research how access has changed, also in relationship to the two communities that in different times made use of the building (Local Community – Goldsmiths Community)
• Information Design: learn how to present data in different formats

Hypothesis: Laurie Grove Baths as an “Hybrid” = signs of the past access and the present one are coexisting (old plaques and names + new ones)

Question: Would the ecology of the building change by introducing a “different” access to it?

Question: Can the Data Jam be an implemented form of and for “access”?

The resources and strategies I will use are:

• Research the Victorian Age: power structures and social patterns
• Research the Victorian Baths: why? which people? when? Other Baths in London-UK-Europe  people’s feelings towards them, current usage etc…
• The Local Community and Goldsmiths – why did they sell this building? Any petition? Talk to people and do research
• Analyse Transport: pedestrian and vehicular circulation, parking
• Map Architectural Obstacles
• Track Media System Infrastructures: wireless, lan, digital tv, cable tv, satellite tv etc..
• Question Security: who controls access to the building?
• Map Physical Access: windows, doors, stairs etc..
• Look for Local Archives and Pictures
• Read E. Tufte – Envisioning Information
• Gather information about Pd or/and other similar programmes for the creation of multimedia works

The proof of accomplishing this activity will be:

• To present the group with a good research on what access means and how it has changed in Laurie Grove Baths
• To present the group with some possible developments of this study

Evaluation criteria and means of validation will be:

• Group’s feeds back and interest in my research
• To what extent and how my research can be useful to other people’s researches
• To what extent and how my research can be improved through other people’s researches
• Whether I managed to integrate theory and practice
• Whether I enjoyed my job
• Whether I am satisfied with my job
• Whether I can use the methodology developed and skills (intellectual and practical) learned from this job for other projects
