MA Interactive Media
Learning Activity: Research the Laurie Grove Baths

Student Name: Felix Dragan Date: 23.10.2007

(re)Searching ~ (re)Accessing

My objectives:

Collect relevant information about both the embedded and surrounding media associated with the LG 1.7 building:
- old and present images: photos, moving images if available;
- old and present sounds: surrounding noises, chatters;
- posters, road signs;
- any CCTV footage of the building;
- any information about LG 1,7 available online;
- 'media acquisition/handling devices': surveillance cameras, monitors, access devices;
AIMED DEADLINE: 12.11.'07

Learn how intercoms and/or access codes readers work and to what extend it is possible to change their functioning(make them trigger new 'events');
AIMED DEADLINE: 31.10.'07

Investigate the possibilities of obtaining some (relevant) footage from surveillance cameras;
AIMED DEADLINE: 06.11.'07

Identify the patterns of use of media-systems for accessing information associated with the building (from the past, present and near future) and investigate the (eventual) relations between them;
AIMED DEADLINE: 12.11.'07

Think of a project around the idea of the mental effort of discovering/browsing the building through the exercise of searching/accessing (dynamically) stored information;
AIMED DEADLINE: ongoing until 13.11.'07 and then 27.11.'07

Design, develop and deploy an IT application which simulates/represents the process of accessing the information provided by the associated media;
AIMED DEADLINE: 02.12.'07

Make all obtained data and tools available to other projects.

The resources and strategies I will use are:

Contact the responsible personnel with the security of the building in order to obtain information about the devices used for accessing the building and the information they record/store;
Access available documentation about the past of the building;
Research the new tendencies (hardware and software) in the development of the new devices designed to manage the access in buildings;

The proof of accomplishing this activity will be:
to present the group with all information obtained (including the filtered one organised in a database);
to present my idea based on my research;
to show the group how the access devices or tools I develop can be used in my project;
the tool(s) I develop/employ in order to convey my idea.

Evaluation criteria and means of validation will be:

the feeds back I receive from the group about my research;
how useful for other projects is the information I collected, the tools I built as well as my idea of (re-)discovering the building;
how clear is to the group this idea and how effective its implementation is;
the extend to what I can help with other projects.

My target date for completion of this research will be: 13.11.2007
