MA Interactive Media: Simple self directed learning form:

We will be using a form of self directed learning during the year as a way of managing and planning what it is we need to learn in order to create our final projects.
I will use the forms you write to plan my lectures or to get in external tutors to help with things I do not know about.
For this to work well we need to think about the kind of skills it takes to manage our own learning:

1.The ability to be totally curious and open.
2.The ability to formulate questions, based on personal curiosities, which can be answered through research.
3.The ability to perceive yourself objectively and accept feedback from others about personal performance non-defensively.
4.The ability to diagnose your own learning needs – no what you are good/bad at and why.
5.The ability to identify experiences and human, material resources to accomplish the tasks you set for yourself.
6.The ability to identify data required to answer various kinds of questions.
7.The ability to identify the most efficient means for collecting any required data.
8.The ability to organize, analyse, and evaluate the data so as to get valid answers to questions.
9.The ability to carry out a learning plan systematically and sequentially.
10.The ability to see how well you have done and see how useful this will be in the future.

Activity : Research the Laurie Grove Baths:

Student Name: ___Rony Smith ___ Date ___03-10-07___

My objectives:

Map the Bath House site drainage system.
Learn how to read an architectural plan.
Survey if windows can be open or closed.
Think about sound coming in and out of the windows.
Learn how to measure sonic amplification.
Think of a project to do with residue, drainage and windows.
To learn MySQL to build databases.
To learn ho to time manage.

The resources and strategies I will use are:

Talk to Goldsmiths site office and see if I can get plans of the building.
Contact the local authority to see if there are any historical groups who might have plans.
Look on bathroom fixtures and fitting for company names.
Contact the water company to see where the drains go.
Go round and chart the pipes by hand.
Take pictures of pipes and windows.
Create a database of open windows both outside and in using sound measuring devices.

The proof of accomplishing this activity will be:

To present the group with a map of windows and volumes and show the difference in a database – using MySQL.
To present the group with a plan of drainage and where the waste water went using a 3D programme.
To present the group with an idea that I think they would be interested in based on the research I have discovered.
I can use MySQL on the command line to create a database with tables and fields and search for input.
I can use a 3D programme that uses OpenGL to create arbitrary results.

Evaluation criteria and means of validation will be:

What the group feeds back to me about the quality of my research.
How the group takes the research forward in their own projects.
How satisfied I am with the job I have done.

I can create and manipulate an arbitrary MySQL database on another project.

My target date for completion will be:

Monday 22nd October:
