Groundhog Project

Groundhog is a collaborative project between ICA Cape Town; MediaShed; Projekt Atol; r a d i o q u a l i a; SoSLUG and Sound Kitchen Studio. The objective of the project is to construct and deploy the first I-TASC Automatic Weather Station, Remote Sensor and Packet Radio Unit for Antarctic operations.

Groundhog (translated from the Norwegian word Grunehogna) is the codename for the first I-TASC Reconnaissance and Communications Expedition. The expedition crew will install the solar and wind powered unit at Grunehogna (72 deg 03' S 02 deg 47' W) in order to transmit environmental data via HF radio to SANAE IV base and to the I-TASC partner websites in real time.

Grunehogna has been identified as a possible location for the installation and testing of the prototype I-TASC mobile base station module in the 2007/2008 Antarctic summer season. The I-TASC mobile base station will host artists, scientists, engineers and tactical media workers conducting research and collaborative work in the Dronning Maud Land sector of Antarctica during the International Polar Year in 2008.

Project Leader is Tom Mulcaire (ICA Cape Town).
Production Coordinator is Derek Shaw (MediaShed).
